A chronological collection of stories follows the author's life and documents his witness to many of the twentieth century's milestones, from the innocence of pre-war Prague through the Nazi occupation and World War II, during which the main character sees a Jewish teacher taken away, flees Czechoslovakia, and takes a professorship in Canada.
