Looking at the circumstances and characters of 13 scapegoats ranging in rank from general to lance corporal, this volume illuminates not only how innocent or blameworthy these individuals were, but the actualities of the wars in which they fought and the motives of their accusers. Among the 13 are Alfred Dreyfus, James 'Pete' Longstreet (the 'Old War Horse' of Gettysburg), Romeo Dallaire, head of the UN mission to Rwanda in 1994, and Admiral Byng, infamously shot 'pour encourager les autres'.
